HIGHLIGHTS FROM EXPLORE COSTA RICA

MI CAFECITO COFFEE COOPERATIVE TOUR
Visit the Mi Cafecito coffee cooperative in San Miguel de Sarapiqui, see shade-grown coffee plants, learn about everything from harvesting, to husking, drying, and roasting the beans before enjoying the best part – a fresh cup! Feel good about all this eating and drinking knowing that you are supporting a G Adventures for Good project that helps 200 farmers and their families.

MONTEVERDE INSTITUTE LECTURE & REFORESTATION PROJECT
Visit the Monteverde Institute, a research centre where many National Geographic grantees have been based, and dig into reforestation efforts firsthand, either by planting trees or assisting with tree care in the nurseries.

TORTILLA MAKING AND HOME DINNER
Learn the art of tortilla-making from Doña Mara in her home. Grind the corn, then mix the dough and bake it in a wood-burning stove. When the tortillas are ready, sit down to a tasty casado (traditional Costa Rican dish) prepared with the tortillas you’ve made.

ITINERARY NOTES
Occasionally, the Sea Turtle Conservancy is closed to visitors as it is an active research facility. In the event this happens, you'll visit the nearby Caño Palma Biological Station, which includes a sea turtle and marine conservation presentation, a hands-on turtle measuring experience on the beach, and optional beach clean.

ABOUT NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC JOURNEYS WITH G ADVENTURES

G Adventures is one of the world’s largest and most sustainable small group adventure tour operators. In 2019, they launched a program called Ripple Scores, allowing you to see the percentage of local businesses and services used in the creation of each and every one of their trips. The higher the Ripple Score, the more money stays within the local community.

In addition to numerous awards celebrating their sustainability initiatives in the tourism industry, they’ve also been recognized by world-class organizations such as National Geographic and the Jane Goodall Institute. In 2016, G Adventures launched a partnership with National Geographic by offering a travel style called National Geographic Journeys with G Adventures. These tours offer travellers opportunities to get closer to local communities, connecting you to local cultures, and which provide a greater emphasis on education and conservation. In 2017, G Adventures’ animal welfare policy was officially endorsed by the Jane Goodall Institute.

Through their non-profit arm, Planeterra, G Adventures connects social enterprises to the tourism marketplace. They do so by providing catalyst funding, capacity training and a market link for small businesses that support local and indigenous communities, women, youth, and the environment. Planeterra now supports over 50 social enterprises in over 40 different countries.
